Democracy

We promote Democratic rule throughout the federation in the following ways:

School council- all pupils can stand to be elected on to school council and the children in the class vote. There are two representatives from each class and they meet regularly to organise events and make decisions for the school.

Eco-Champions- these are also elected by their peers and can choose to stand for election. There are two representatives from each class and they meet regularly to discuss how the school can be environmentally friendly and save energy.

Prefects- Year 6 children can stand to be a prefect and deliver a speech which is watched by the whole federation. Children and staff vote for who they believe will make a good prefect and they are elected to office for the year.

We have also had links with our local MP who has visited school council and discussed what being a MP involves.

Rule of Law

At Winklebury the importance of laws are held in high regard. This includes those which govern the class, school and our country. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

When children make inappropriate behaviour choices staff explain why breaking the school rules always results in a negative effect to others in our school community.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.

As a school we educate and provide boundaries for the children to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and by following our rules of Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Ready.

Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise these safely, for example through e-safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it is through choice of challenge in their work, of how they record, or participation in an extra-curricular activity, children are given the opportunities to make choices.

Mutual Respect

Our school ethos and behaviour policy has been built around the core value of respect and this is discussed regularly with the children. Children are actively taught that their behaviours can affect their own rights and those of others. Our PSHE curriculum raises the profile of respect for others and this provides a common language throughout the federation.

Our entire school community understands that all members are expected to treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

This is achieved through enhancing children’s understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Through our curriculum and assemblies we educate the children about other religions, cultures and beliefs whilst challenging the children to see the point of view of others. As the federation has become more diverse we have celebrated this and use the life experiences of our own pupils to educate others.
